90th Anniversary

1935 - 2025

There was always a “Dogs Home” dog around at home but I must have been about 20 years old before I saw my first Airedale and was totally captivated. However, we first purchased a Welsh Terrier from Mollie Harmsworth (Bengal) thinking it would be easier to keep in a small house (not necessarily so!). It was some years later before I was in a position to purchase my own dog and was lucky enough to find a litter of Airedales locally of mainly Bengal and Jokyl breeding. The breeder introduced me to the West of England & South Wales Airedale Terrier Club, mainly for the purpose of learning to trim. I quickly got interested in trimming and then started to show at local Open shows and then to help out at WESWATC. It was then a natural progression to breed the occasional litter and numbers increased as they do.

In 1992, I was invited to judge a few classes of Airedales at the Terrier Club of South Wales. Following on from this I was keen to learn all I could about the other terrier breeds and to start to judge them. Over the years I have been privileged to judge the terriers and Terrier Group at open shows many times, which I greatly enjoy. In 2004 I was approved to award Challenge Certificates for the first time at The Midland Counties Airedale Terrier Club, which was a great honour.  Since then I have awarded CCs on five subsequent  occasions including National Terrier and National Airedale Terrier Association.

It was a complete surprise (shock!) to be invited to judge Airedale Terriers at Crufts which, due to Covid, did not happen until March 2024.  I had the most amazing day and will never forget it.   A huge thank you to SEATC for inviting me so soon after and I look forward immensely to the day.

The South Of England Airedale Terrier Club Championship Show

6th December2025

This was the club's 90th Anniversary show and the committee spared no effort in making it a memorable occasion.   Prizes, gifts, raffle and refreshments were second to none with amazing attention to detail.  I was honoured to be invited to judge and enjoyed the day enormously.  Whilst numbers of dogs are low these days, quality is still high.   Overall construction is excellent with well-placed shoulders , level top-lines and well-bodied dogs.    Movement can still be a problem with rocking front action and close behind.   I noticed some large wide-set ears which is a shame as it spoils the expression.  Temperament was generally steady, happy dogs showing well.   DCC & BIS was Turner's CH CRILLEE CARRY ON THE LEGEND.  BCC and RBIS was Rust's CH JOKYL POWER LADY.  BPIS was Hunter's MULIEBRITY MYSTIC TOPAZ.  BV was Haly's VIVAVICK AD LIBITUM.

PD (1)  1.  Hunter's MULIEBRITY MYSTIC TOPAZ , this is an outstanding puppy, a shame he had no competition, ideal size and substance for age,  shows a fantastic profile, good head, correct ear, long neck, super shoulder, short level back, well developed body for age, tail on top and good bend of stifle, hard coat well presented, enjoying the experience, movement starting to come together, BPIS

PGD (1)  1. Knights Steinke & Stoke's  TEMTIZ BUZZ LIGHTYEAR AT LELAPS , reasonable all round dog, eventually moved OK when settled, such a shame he won't be handled after all the effort the owner puts in

LD (2,1)  1.  Brand's JOKYL KINGFISHER, quality young dog with an ideal profile, refined head, small eye, strong neck, straight front, the best of shoulder placement, good depth at brisket, short level back, tail on top with plenty behind,  lovely bend of stifle, starting to tighten up in movement, a slow developer  I would say but that's often the best way, RCC

OD(3,1)   1. Turner's CH CRILLEE CARRY ON THE LEGEND, a super masculine mature dog of great substance without coarseness, well boned and in hard condtion, well constructed throughout, good head with long foreface, keen expression, strong neck, deep chest, level topline, not quite the rear assembly of 2 but perfectly acceptable, when settled one of the best movers today, stood well against the competition, close up he exceeded my expectations, he definitely has the X factor, DCC & BIS

2. Blackburn's LUMOSADIE THE FIREBIRD, a powerful masculine  3 yr old dog, confident and showy, long foreface but preferred the skull of 1,  very well laid back shoulder, level topline, powerful hindquarters with good bend of stifle, moved well, overall sound and balanced but I felt finer trimming would present a more refined picture.

V D/B(2)  1. Haley's VIVAVICK AD LIBITUM , balanced well bodied 7 yr old, well proportioned head, good ear and eye giving an attractive expression, very strong in neck, level topline, good depth at brisket, acceptable hindquarters,  moved with front extension and rear drive, overall a very good bitch, BV

2. Steinke's TOULSYORK PERFECTIONIST AT TEMTIZ, another 7 yr old bitch, lovely temperament, appealing expression,  slightly longer in body than 1 but all the essentials are there, sound and moved freely, a credit to the owner.

JB(1)   1. Hamton & Hall's MULIEBRITY SUNSHINE , a super stylish and impressive young bitch, well proportioned head, small dark eye, correct ear, long strong neck flowing nicely into a short level back, good hindquarters, just needs to settle down and movement should tidy up, good harsh coat well presented.

NB(1,1)   1. Brand's JOKYL DAYDREAMER, attractive young bitch, enjoying the new experience, neat head, keen eye, erratic ears at the moment , well bodied for age , acceptable hindquarters and bend of stifle, the potential is there for good movement when she settles down, well presented and sympathetically handled

LB (4)   1. Hughes, Kempton & Pearce's KNOWLELION CLOWNING AROUND , attractive showy bitch, good substance but still feminine, on her toes,  long, well-proportioned head, correct ears which she used, keen expression, super straight front of ideal width, excellent hindquarters with tail on top and good bend of stifle, neat and tidy throughout, best mover in the class, RCC

             2. Rust's JOKYL SONGBIRD, feminine and refined young bitch, enough substance, balanced with an ideal profile, neat head, attractive expression, preferred front of 1, good shoulder placement, nicely developed body with a level topline, well angulated hindquarters, moved OK

             3. Blackburn's LUMOSADIE SCARLET PHOENIX

OB (3,1)   1. Rust's CH JOKYL POWER LADY , quality, stylish mature bitch showing a superb classic profile, striking head with a long foreface, correct ear and eye, good expression, straight front, neck flowing nicely into well laid back shoulder, short level back , well sprung rib, short coupled, best possible hind quarters, CC & RBIS, just preferred movement of dog for Best In Show

                 2. Du Toit Munro's CRILLEE CARRY ON BABY BE MINE WITH BELLAMUNRO, good all round bitch of some substance, well used ears and small dark eye giving a keen expression, correctly constructed throughout, actually the best mover of the bitches today, felt that closer trimming could improve appearance of  proportion of neck to body length
